Green Day, the punk rock trio, consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, vocals), and Tré Cool (drums, percussion), brought their latest dynamic, and literally explosive concert experience to US Airways Center on August 22.

Twitter was flooded in to the early morning tweets from pumped concertgoers amazed by the epic performance delivered by Green Day. The concert was that good and well, that long. In fact, Green Day performed for nearly 2 hours and 45 minutes, with the concert concluding just before 11:45pm.

The superb set list provided a mix of songs from their latest release “21 century Breakdown”, their 2005 “American Idiot” as well as songs from their previous releases and a few covers that were masterfully arranged.

Impressive stage production combined: fire, fireworks, spectacular lighting, video backdrops and more. It was visually hypnotizing and while it could have been considered over the top or distracting for any other artist, Green Day was able to command the stage and remain the center of attention, with their powerful vocals, lyrics and musical expertise. Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool shined on stage and it was brilliant to see Billie Joe Armstrong play riffs with skill that would rival any other guitar great.

The trio was able to change the tempo of the performance without missing a beat. It didn’t matter if the band participated in various onstage shenanigans (which included water guns, toilet paper blowers, various costumes and a full mooning of the audience) or if there was a single spotlight on stage for an acoustic solo, the crowds’ energy was invested for the entire set.

Green Day delivers musically, instrumentally and provides an eye catching stage show, however this is not what makes their concert, quite possibly, the best touring today. The bands uncanny ability to get the audience deeply involved in their performance, is what sets them apart. Armstrong, not only yells, motivates and speaks to the crowd, he goes one step further and gains active participation. He is very aware of the crowd and seems to have a gift for plucking the most entertaining concertgoers out of the audience. At a Green Day concert the crowd is just another instrument that the band utilizes during their performance.

Often, these crowd interactions generate some of the most memorable moments of the show, as was the case at this evenings concert. Tonight, Armstrong selected a handful of crowd members to

join him on stage at different points of the performance. Perhaps the most memorable, was a female concertgoer that laid a big fat kiss on Armstrong immediately after joining him on stage as he performed, “East Jesus Nowhere”. After recovering from the shock, he then proceeded to convince her to leap of the front of the stage to crowd surf among the other fans who were eager to participate. (You can see her leap in the concert gallery)

Kissing wasn’t the only talent Phoenix fans had to offer. Two concertgoers made their vocal debuts singing “Longview”, the female chosen was obviously nervous but quickly navigated her way through the first few versus. It was then her male counterpart’s opportunity and he rocked the stage. I think everyone’s jaw dropped a bit, including Armstrong’s as this guy knew how to sing and had stage presence to boot. At the end of the song Armstrong announced that the two had been the best they’d seen on tour so far!

The final audience participant joined in on playing guitar for “Jesus of Suburbia” which was one of the four songs performed as an encore. Armstrong raised the bar and required it t0 be someone that actually knew how to play the song, and even challenged a few of those eager to participate to name the key it was in. The guy finally selected, proved his worth and performed as if he belonged with the band and did not miss a beat.

The concert ended appropriately with Armstrong singing “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”, which everyone in attendance could agree that they had. Overall the performance was epic and the best concert to come to the Valley this year and for that, Green Day deserves the highest honor of a 21 gun salute.

Mayor Phil Gordon has proclaimed today, May 8, A GREEN DAY FOR GREEN DAY.  A GREEN DAY FOR GREEN DAY is in honor of tickets going on sale for the Grammy Award winning rock band, Green Day who are set to perform at US Airways Center on August 22 and is an effort to help educate the people of Phoenix on the ways to reduce their impact on the environment and to help make for a greener Phoenix. Fans and residents of Phoenix are encouraged to participate in the following eco-friendly acts that will help continue in the efforts to make Phoenix America’s Greenest City.

Use Alternative Transportation such as Light Rail or Phoenix Metro System:

Carbon emissions from vehicles are one of the worst causes of global warming. A short travel from your home to work may not seem to be a big polluter, but in reality a drive of about 10 miles emits around 19 pounds of carbon dioxide into the air; and when multiplied by the number of daily car users, the number is astronomical. Taking alternate transportation will not only help the environment but will also help you in saving money.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle:

Reduce the amount of waste produced; Reuse the item, or find someone who can use it; Recycle the product so that our valuable natural resources can be used again and again. These three R’s not only help us reduce the amount of trash we produce, increase the life cycle of products but also help us to reduce our carbon footprint.

Change from incandescent light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs:

This can prevent carbon emissions equivalent to that of more than 800,000 cars. If even one incandescent bulb is replaced with a compact fluorescent light in every house.

Plant a tree, grass or shrubs:

Planting trees is the best way to go environmentally green as they absorb carbon- dioxide from the environment. Planting trees also help in preventing soil erosion.

Conserve Water:

In a 10- minute shower we consume up to 50 gallons i.e. 189 liters of water. Choose a short shower and you will save up to 200 liters of water, run full loads in your dishwasher and washing machines and make little repairs in your house such as a leaky valve or toilet, which can save more than 500 gallons a year.

Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool have chosen to bring their first tour in three years to US Airways Center in Phoenix, a venue and a city that continue to implement environmentally friendly practices. US Airways Center has purchased Green E-Certified carbon offsets equivalent to the amount of energy needed to power US Airways Center the evening of the Green Day performance on August 22. Below is a list of the many other changes that have been implemented at US Airways Center and throughout the City of Phoenix.

 ·         Launched recycling program throughout the venue in December 2009.

·         Development of solar project to be operational in 2009.

 ·         One hundred percent recycling throughout US Airways Center, Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and Phoenix RoadRunners offices.

·         All lighting in the US Airways Center parking garage was replaced with an energy-efficient motion activated system in 2007.

·         All exit signage in the parking garage has been replaced with LED lighting.

·         Initiated a carpooling incentive program which encourages employees to take public transportation or carpool.

·         The building cleaning product supplier, Maintenance Mart has put into action a number of “green” practices throughout the building to reduce the impact on the environment, including:

o        Using coreless toilet tissue with larger rolls of toilet tissue (with recycled content of 20%)

o        Installing hands free towel dispensers with larger hand towel rolls (with recycled content of 40%)

o        Using recycled cleaning tools with bamboo handles, instead of hardwood

 ·         The new Phoenix Convention Center has a 100 kW solar photovoltaic system on its roof.  The system provides power directly into the facility and is designed to offset power purchased from the utility. Inside the Convention Center, they even have chairs made from recycled seat belts.

·         Phoenix has the largest alternative fuels fleet in Arizona.

·         Phoenix celebrated the opening of the light rail in 2008; taking cars off of the street and improving our air quality. The 20-mile Metro Rail system opened in December on-time and on-budget, and daily ridership numbers have exceeded expectations by over 50 percent.

·         The Public Transit Department operates over 3,555 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) buses, representing 71 percent of the bus fleet.  The Aviation Department’s inter-terminal and rental car center bus fleets are 100 percent compressed natural gas (CNG).

·          919 out of the City’s 1,069 traffic signals have one or more LED lamps for the signal head indications. The City been installing LED lamps for the traffic signal heads for about 10 years.

Help maintain the vision to make Phoenix America’s Greenest City!

GREEN DAY ANNOUNCES VENUES FOR UPCOMING SUMMER TOUR!

MULTI-PLATINUM BAND HIT THE ROAD FOR FIRST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN THREE YEARS IN SUPPORT OF NEW ALBUM, 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN, TO BE RELEASED WORLDWIDE ON MAY 15TH, 2009

Burbank, CA- Reprise Records’ Green Day has announced the venues for their first proper tour of the United States and Canada in more than three years. The tour begins July 3rd at Seattle’s Key Arena and will cross North America through the summer, including a July 27th stop at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, before finishing up with a show at the Forum in Los Angeles on August 25th. All cities and venues are listed below. Ticket on-sale dates will be announced soon.
Green Day are touring in support of their long-awaited eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown, which will be released globally by Reprise Records on Friday, May 15th, 2009. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool have been at work writing, arranging, and recording 21st Century Breakdown since early 2006 with producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins). The first single, “Know Your Enemy” is the No. 1 track at Alternative radio — the band’s ninth No. 1 single at the format, making them the artist with the second most No. 1′s of all-time at Alternative.

Green Day recently performed 21st Century Breakdown in its entirety during a series of club shows for hometown fans in the Bay Area. In its review of a show at Oakland’s Fox Theater, Rolling Stone commented that the band, augmented by guitarists Jason White and Jeff Matika, and keyboardist Jason Freese, had the “Quadrophenia-like hang of 21st Century Breakdown‘s classic rock melodies and lifetime-punk drive down solid” and that the album is “rock opera in which the rock always comes first.”

21st Century Breakdown is Green Day’s best album,” the reviewer concluded, “and at the Fox, they proved that the rock opera can be as punk as a Clash 45.”

21st Century Breakdown
is Green Day’s first studio album since 2004′s two-time Grammy Award-winning punk-rock opera American Idiot, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, and went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide.Green Day’s upcoming North American tour dates are as follows:JULY 03   Seattle, WA                  Key Arena04   Vancouver, BC               GM Place06   Edmonton, AB                Rexall Place07   Saskatoon, SAS            Credit Union Centre09   Winnipeg, MAN              MTS Centre10   Fargo, ND                      Fargo Dome11   Minneapolis, MN           Target Center13   Chicago, IL                      United Center14   Detroit, MI                        Palace of Auburn Hills16   Hamilton, ONT                 Copps Coliseum17   Ottawa, ONT                   Scotiabank18   Montreal, QUE                 Bell Centre20   Boston, MA                     TD Banknorth Garden21   Philadelphia, PA             Wachovia Spectrum22   Pittsburgh, PA                  Mellon Arena24   Hartford, CT                    XL Center25   Albany, NY                       Times Union Center27   New York, NY                    Madison Square Garden29   Washington DC                Verizon Center31   Nashville, TN                    Sommet Center AUGUST 01   Atlanta, GA                   Gwinnett Center03   Tampa, FL                    St. Pete Times Forum04   Miami, FL                       American Airlines Arena05   Orlando, FL                    Amway Arena07   New Orleans, LA          New Orleans Arena09   Houston, TX                   Toyota Center09   San Antonio, TX             AT&T Center11   St Louis, MO                  Scottrade Center12   Kansas City, 12            Sprint Center13   Omaha, NE                    Qwest Center15   Denver, CO                   Pepsi Center16   Salt Lake City, UT        Energy Sol Arena18   San Jose, CA                HP Pavilion20   San Diego, CA              Cox Arena21   Las Vegas, NV              Mandalay Bay22   Phoenix, AZ                   US Air Arena24   Sacramento, CA          Arco Arena25   Los Angeles, CA          The Forum   www.GreenDay.com
