You can rock at any age by D. Marcher

I have to admit, even though Aerosmith and ZZ Top are from my parents’ era… their performances are timeless.  In fact, these two bands performance outshined some of the recent shows I have been to!

Perhaps it is the years, well, decades of tour experience.  Or just the fact they really are that good, this concert is not one to be missed.

ZZ Top, the trio of Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, started off the night with the no frills performance, letting their music take center stage.  Don’t get me wrong they were very entertaining, but what is just how good their music is, no frills needed.

Their fans were not disappointed as they played their classics “Legs”,”Cheap Sunglasses,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” Gimme All Your Lovin’” and “Tush.”

As the night progressed, the Cricket Pavilion Lawn tripled in capacity as Fans prepared for Aerosmith.  I had to admit, I was slightly concerned about their performance, due to all the recent injuries the band had sustained.

I was not disappointed as Tyler and the rest of Aerosmith kicked off the night with “Eat the Rich”.  As a complete side note, I had to admit I was slightly taken back by Tylers’ appearance and it slightly resembled that of Janice

Dickerson.  Regardless of the outfit, which did improve during the evening as he lost the hat, glasses and coat and became the Rock God we all know so well.

Aerosmith kept the night rocking performing their hits “Sweet Emotion,” “Walk This Way,” “Dream On” and “Train Kept a Rollin’.

As I looked around, I realized I had never seen such a diverse crowd.  I was sitting next to a 20 something on one side and I am guessing a 70 something (no I didn’t ask) on the other, and they were both screaming their heads off, often conversing about the performance as the night progressed.  Where else would you see that?

Both agreed that the highlight of the night was when ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons joined Aerosmith for “Rattlesnake Shake”.

It just proves, you can rock at any age!

Phoenix Concert Review: Nine Inch Nails Owns the Cricket Pavilion Stage May 15 2009

by Cassie Roberts, www.FromTheCrowd.com Contributor

Some shows, have a lot of hype, from fans, from the media and well from just a lot of great PR, however, after the show begins, you realize its all just hype. Occasionally, this is due in no part to the actual band performing, but in some cases, the crowd itself, or some other outside factor like the weather. In some cases the bar, has simply been set too high.

Here in Arizona, we already have two things going against us, the weather (anytime after March) and the crowds (which aren’t exactly known for being the most supportive, in the I’m going to stand the entire show type of way). Even the most seasoned performer can fail to deliver with these two roadblocks, you just never know until the set has begun.

There was a lot of hype with the NIN|JA tour, after all it is the first tour in 9 years with them sharing a stage… so I have to admit I was concerned, but with my ticket in hand, with faith in Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction, I had a good feeling about tonight and I was right!

I do have to give props to Street Sweeper Social Club. I had read and heard some great things and they provided a set that was unlike anything I was expecting. I feel privilege to be there on the ground floor with them on this tour. Sure, I’m talking about Tom Morello and Boots Riley, two legendary performers in their own genre, but would they mix? The answer to that is an overwhelming YES!

Jane’s Addiction also delivered a strong set and was able to get the crowd motivated and on their feet, however, the night belonged to Nine Inch Nails.

All of the elements were in place for one of those once in a life time performances. Sure it was hot, but there was an amazing energy in the crowd, that was matched by NIN on stage. The sounds, the lighting, the crowd and the music all collided to create the perfect enviorment for NIN as to deliver, perhaps the one of the best performances I have ever witnessed. The set was moving, the stage and lighting were unprecedented and the crowd was eating out of the palm of their hands.

To steal a tweet from Tom Morello (http://twitter.com/tmorello) @tmorello shared: “It is near impossible to make a musical moment in a 15,000 seat venue “haunting” but NIN “Hurt” is that and more. Just stunning. Unreal.” Keep in mind who this statement is coming from.

If you missed this show, you may never forgive yourself, however, you still have time to catch them on tour for the rest of the summer near by. It’s time for a road trip!

TOM MORELLO AND BOOTS RILEY JOIN FORCES TO FORM STREET SWEEPER SOCIAL CLUB Debut Tour with NIN

Street Sweeper Social ClubTOM MORELLO AND BOOTS RILEY JOIN FORCES TO FORM STREET SWEEPER SOCIAL CLUB

SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM TO BE RELEASED JUNE 16th THROUGH WARNER MUSIC GROUP’S INDEPENDENT LABEL GROUP

DEBUT TOUR CONFIRMED WITH NINE INCH NAILS AND JANE’S ADDICTION Tour Dates below!

April 22nd, 2009 — New York, New York — Tom Morello and Boots Riley have joined forces to form Street Sweeper Social Club. The group’s anticipated self-titled debut album will be released June 16th through Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group. The 11-song set was produced by Tom Morello and features Boots Riley on vocals, Morello on guitar and bass, and Stanton Moore (Galactic) on drums.

“It’s revolutionary party jams,” said Morello of Street Sweeper Social Club. “It’s got huge steamroller riffs combined with depth, charge, funk, while Boots unloads clip after clip of incendiary rhymes rich with satire and venom.” Riley added, “This is a time when the working class is being fleeced left and right. More families will be homeless and more people will be jobless. They’ll need something to listen to on their ipods while storming Wall Street.”

Street Sweeper Social Club’s debut tour will be opening all dates in North America on the Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction May-June Tour (confirmed dates below). The tour will find Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction sharing a stage for the first time since the debut of the Lollapalooza festival in 1991 (as well as the first tour by the original lineup of Jane’s Addiction in seventeen years).

Tom Morello is a founding member and guitarist of the rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. The two bands are responsible for multiple Grammy Awards and a combined 30 million albums sold worldwide. Morello has also received critical acclaim as a solo artist known as The Nightwatchman. Widely celebrated for his unique voice as a master electric guitarist, he is recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Guitar Players of All-Time (#26).” He is also one of only two guitarists featured as a playable animated character in the overwhelmingly popular Activision video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Tom Morello graduated from Harvard University with honors as a Political Science major and has been a widely recognized political activist throughout his career. With System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Morello formed Axis of Justice, an organization whose purpose is to bring together musicians, music fans, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice.

Boots Riley is best known as the leader of The Coup, the seminal Hip-Hop group from Oakland, CA. As a producer and lyricist, Riley has crafted critically acclaimed albums for The Coup that have graced the year-end Top 10 lists of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and more. They have also received “Album of the Year” honors from The Washington Post, Time Out New York, while Billboard Magazine declared the group “the best hip-hop act of the past decade.” Born in Chicago and raised in East Oakland’s Funktown neighborhood, Boots became a teenage community organizer. From his history of student organizing in Oakland’s public schools, serving on the central committee for the Progressive Labor Party, being the President of Youth InCar (Youth International Committee Against Racism), organizing to build California’s Anti-Racist Farm Workers’ Union, to developing “guerrilla hip hop concerts” (mobile concerts on flatbed trucks), Boots Riley has been an integral part of the progressive struggle for radical change through culture.

Live Nation and 98 KUPD are very proud to announce

MARILYN MANSON & SLAYER

TO TOP THE BILL ON ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL ‘09

FRIDAY, JULY 17

LINEUP FOR RIOTOUS ROADSHOW INCLUDES
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, TRIVIUM, CANNIBAL CORPSE,
MANY MORE

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, the most electrifying carnival to ever
hit the summer concert circuit, is back…and bigger. Hard music legends MARILYN
MANSON and SLAYER will top the bill on this year’s highly anticipated tour,
which is set to kick off July 10 at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Sacramento,
CA. The festival will stop in Phoenix at Cricket Wireless Pavilion on Friday,
July 17. Tickets will go on sale Friday, April 24 at 10am.

Like last year’s Godzillian-sized lineup, the second annual Rockstar Energy
Drink Mayhem Festival will feature a gaggle of rock’s heaviest bands: the main
stage will see Marilyn Manson and Slayer joined by BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE; the Jägermeister stage will feature TRIVIUM, ALL THAT
REMAINS, GOD FORBID and the Jägermeister Battle of the Bands winner; the Hot
Topic stage will feature extreme metal bands CANNIBAL CORPSE, JOB FOR A COWBOY,
BEHEMOTH, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and WHITECHAPEL. The World’s Greatest Freestyle
Motocross team METAL MULISHA will also be revving up the crowd with their unique
style of death-defying motorcycle stunts on all dates.

The tour will see Manson and Slayer performing tracks from each of their
long-awaited new albums. Manson will be playing “We’re From America” and lead
single “Arma…geddon,” both from new album The High End of Low, in stores May
26th. The album was produced by Manson, longtime friend and foil Twiggy Ramirez
and keyboardist Chris Vrenna. Manson fans will note that this is his first
collaboration with Ramirez in close to a decade.

TICKETS ON-SALE FRIDAY, APRIL 24 AT 10AM

Slayer will tear through “Psychopathy Red” and other new material from their
yet-to-be-titled new album. The band recently announced that “Psychopathy
Red”-the band’s first new song since 2006’s Christ Illusion-will be available as
a 7-inch vinyl disc beginning Saturday, April 18th, as part of the third annual
Record Store Day. Only 5,000 of the limited edition discs will be manufactured
worldwide, and they will be available exclusively at participating independent
record stores (log onto www.recordstoreday.com <http://www.recordstoreday.com/>
for the list of participating retailers). Slayer chose to unleash “Psychopathy
Red” on this day and only through independent record stores to acknowledge the
support those outlets have offered to the band and to metal music over the
years.

Killswitch Engage and producer Brendan O’Brien (Mastodon, Pearl Jam, Rage
Against The Machine) recently wrapped production on the follow-up to 2006’s
gold-certified release, As Daylight Dies. The band appeared on the cover of
Revolver magazine’s 2009 preview issue and was praised by Alternative Press and
Decibel for having “one of the most anticipated albums of 2009.”

Bullet For My Valentine are currently recording a new album with Don Gilmore
(Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne) in London and Wales.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is co-produced by Live Nation and is
the brainchild of Kevin Lyman, John Reese and CAA’s Darryl Eaton, the creative
team behind some of the industry’s most successful road jaunts, including the
long-running Vans Warped Tour and the Worldwide Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour.

Following the proven model of utilizing sponsorship to deliver a lower ticket
price and an enhanced concert experience, the tour organizers have joined forces
once again with ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK, the festival’s title sponsor.

In addition to catching a slew of speaker-shredding performances,
festival-goers can take part in a number of activities, including playing the
newest video games, perusing vendors, attending autograph signing sessions and a
host of other interactive activities that will add to the carnival-like
experience.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is made possible through the support
of title sponsor Rockstar Energy Drink and supporting sponsors Hot Topic,
Jagermeister, Rockband 2, Hard Rock Cafe, Affliction, Revolver Magazine,
Roadrunner Records, Metal Blade Records, Pick The Band Records, Prosthetic
Records, the Shirts For A Cure Project, media partner FUEL TV and many more!
